Original acrylic on stretched canvas painting.
70 x 50 cm
The moment when a pianist sits on the stool, illuminated by the bright lights but also shrouded in darkness, and plays those first notes into the silent auditorium. It’s one of my favourite things to experience – the whole audience is mesmerised, but for the pianist, it’s just him and the piano.
I wanted this piece to be both dramatic and calming, and simple and messy. None of the imperfect spotlights are touching him; he’s in his element, captured in his music.
Earlier this year I went to see a production in Liverpool, based on the story of Lennon and McCartney. The beginning of ‘Hey Jude’ looked just like this, and I was compelled to immortalise it in a painting.
